Nebraska Town Considering Ban On Renting To Illegal Immigrants

Nebraska

A small town in Nebraska is trying to crack down on illegal immigration and is working to pass a new ordinance to keep undocumented immigrants out of their town. The Scribner City Council needs just one more affirmative vote to pass an ordinance which would make it illegal for property owners to rent a home or apartment to a person who is in the United States illegally, and force all employers in the city to use the federal E-verify system to confirm that their employees are legally allowed to work in the country.

The new ordinance comes as Costco is building a new plant in the city, sparking concerns that demand for many of the 1,000 new jobs will change the demographics of the town, which is 96% white according to the Lincoln Journal-Star.

Scribner Mayor Ken Thomas believes that the town fully supports the new ordinance.

“I have not had one person come up to me and question what’s going on,” he told the Omaha World-Herald.
