US Department Of Commerce To Ban TikTok and WeChat On Sept. 20

TikTok is about to become banned software in the United States according to an announcement made today (September 18, 2020) by the US Department of Commerce.

In recent weeks, the US government has said that TikTok poses a serious security risk to the United States and President Trump has threatened in the past to have the app banned. In the announcement today, the US Department of Commerce said that it would ban Americans from downloading the popular app, along with another Chinese owned app WeChat, effective Sunday, September 20th.

This decision comes on the heels of a bidding war by American companies looking to become the US partner to China's ByteDance which owns TikTok. In the latest reports, Oracle has agreed to be that partner, but the deal has yet to be approved by either government.
